The new Audi Q5 SUV: proven concept in its third generation

The new Audi Q5 SUV: proven concept in its third generation: The third-generation Audi Q5 has been globally unveiled, though information about its Australian release remains unknown. The 2025 Audi Q5 features a range of petrol and diesel engines, all incorporating mild-hybrid technology.

Following Audi’s current model-naming convention, even-numbered models are transitioning to electric platforms, while odd-numbered ones, such as the Q5, continue with traditional internal combustion engines.

Details specific to the Australian market will be announced closer to the local launch. Internationally, the Q5 offers three engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 140kW and 340Nm, available in either front- or all-wheel drive; a 2.9-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder delivering 150kW and 400Nm with all-wheel drive; and a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine generating 270kW and 500Nm, exclusive to the top-tier SQ5 model. Each engine is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The 48-volt mild-hybrid system is designed to lower fuel consumption and emissions by providing up to 18kW of power for short bursts via the powertrain generator, which can also recover up to 25kW of energy into the 1.7kWh battery during deceleration. Unlike traditional engines, the Q5’s electric air conditioning system can operate the climate control at full capacity, even when the engine is off.

Future plug-in hybrid versions are expected to be added to the lineup.

Drivers will find a dual-screen setup, featuring an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch infotainment display, along with a customizable Head-Up Display that projects speed, driver assistance data, and navigation onto the windshield.

An optional 10.9-inch screen is available for the front passenger, enabling infotainment use without distracting the driver.

The infotainment system is compatible with third-party apps such as YouTube and is powered by a 685-watt, 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System. The second-row seats can be adjusted forward and backward, and their angle can be modified for improved passenger comfort or to increase cargo space.

Front passengers benefit from a 15-watt wireless smartphone charging tray with cooling, two USB-C ports offering up to 60 watts of charging, and two additional USB-C ports providing up to 100 watts, suitable for charging laptops and other large devices.

Lighting plays a significant role in the new Q5, with ambient lighting integrated throughout the cabin and OLED tail lights offering a three-dimensional effect. The rear spoiler features a light that projects a graphic onto the upper rear window when braking, simulating an expansive brake light.

At the front, Matrix LED headlights with 15 individually controlled segments allow for customizable lighting patterns, enabling drivers to personalise the Coming Home and Leaving Home light sequences.

Audi asserts that the new Q5 provides improved ride comfort and handling, with the SUV fitted with conventional steel springs and Frequency Selective Damping shock absorbers. An optional air suspension system is also available.

Standard safety features include rear parking sensors with distance display, cruise control with a speed limiter, lane departure warning, and attention/drowsiness alerts.

Buyers can also choose from a variety of Advanced Driver Assist features, such as cloud-based Adaptive Driving Assist plus, Active Front Assist—which combines emergency brake assist, evasion assist, turn assist, and front cross-traffic alert—sign-based cruise control, Park Assist plus, and Rear Turn Assist.

Like its predecessor, the 2025 Audi Q5 is manufactured in Mexico. Pricing information has not yet been released, but a price increase over the current model, which starts at $73,400 before on-road costs, is anticipated.
