This Marvel hit, which premiered on July 26, had an impressive domestic debut of $211 million, marking the sixth-largest opening weekend in history. Since then, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has continued to dominate the box office, raking in $516 million in North America and $568 million internationally. In just two weeks, it surpassed the total earnings of its predecessors—2016’s “Deadpool” ($783 million) and 2018’s “Deadpool 2” ($786 million). It’s now the second-biggest film of 2024, trailing only Disney’s Pixar success, “Inside Out 2” ($1.558 billion), and the second R-rated movie to enter the billion-dollar club.

Back in October 2019, “Joker” set the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film by surpassing “Deadpool” ($783 million) and “Deadpool 2” ($785 million, including its PG-13 holiday cut). Now, the tables have turned.

“Thank you for making Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie the biggest of all time,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “It’s amazing to see how much audiences are enjoying this movie, just as much as we enjoyed creating it. All the discussions we had were totally worth it!”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” hit the $1 billion mark faster than “Joker,” though the latter didn’t have a release in China. The film is also the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, after “Inside Out 2,” and one of only two films in 2024 to cross the $1 billion threshold.

Yesterday, “Deadpool & Wolverine” added $11.9 million to its global tally ($4.5 million domestically and $7.4 million internationally). The top 10 international markets as of Thursday are:

UK ($58.7 million), China ($57.1 million), Mexico ($39.6 million), Australia ($33.2 million), Germany ($27.3 million), France ($26.6 million), Brazil ($22.9 million), Spain ($20.6 million), India ($18.4 million), and Italy ($16.5 million).

Overall, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has exceeded expectations since its $444 million global debut in late July, outperforming both “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2” in domestic, international, and worldwide markets.

Feige jokingly referenced a line in the movie where Deadpool quips that Feige declared cocaine as the only thing off-limits. In reality, Feige clarified that he never made such a statement. “We were open to anything,” Feige told Variety in July. “But after you make a joke 28 times, it sometimes loses its humor. Maybe I’m a bit conservative when it comes to drug use, but I thought, ‘Eh, it’s not that funny.’ Ryan, of course, stores everything in his brain for later use as great jokes. And he added it to the script.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their iconic antihero roles, is notable for bringing characters previously owned by 20th Century Fox into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s also the first R-rated movie in the MCU.

“It’s never rated R just for the sake of it,” Reynolds told Variety before the film’s release. “A lot of it comes from the character. Deadpool is very crass. His mind is like a half-eaten omelet inside the head of a 7-year-old.”

Ticket sales have skyrocketed, thanks to Reynolds and director Shawn Levy bringing Jackman’s tough mutant Logan out of retirement and reuniting a lineup of Fox-era heroes, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Chris Evans as the Human Torch from “Fantastic Four,” and Wesley Snipes as Blade, to join Deadpool and Wolverine on a timeline-saving mission. Dedicated fans rushed to theaters to avoid spoilers about plot twists, major cameos, and other surprises
