As the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16 family of smartphones approaches, new photos of the iFab Four have been released, showcasing significant design changes for the upcoming iOS-powered devices.

Renowned Apple leaker Sonny Dickson has provided the latest scoop, revealing exclusive images that highlight the design, elements, and principles of the four new iPhones. Apple is anticipated to launch these iPhones in early September, but many new hardware features are already visible. Dickson’s models are late-stage dummy samples, typically used for product shots and to allow third-party accessory manufacturers to test the fit and function of their products on final designs supplied by Apple, without internal circuitry and software.

First up are the new iPhone 16 Pro models. Three colors are displayed, reminiscent of last year’s White Titanium, Black Titanium, and Natural Titanium. Although 2023 also saw a Blue Titanium color, this isn’t shown in Dickson’s images. However, new colors are likely to be introduced to boost sales as customers look for fashionable choices.

The iPhone 16 colors include standard white and black, with pink, blue, and green added to the mix. These colors are deep but subtle in tone.

Update: Thursday, August 1. Alongside the three colors Sonny Dickson has shown, a potential fourth option for the iPhone 16 Pro has surfaced. MacRumors reports a bronze look for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. Additionally, long-time Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kou has noted that the iPhone 16 Pro family will come in four colors: black, white/silver, grey/natural titanium, and rose.

The artistic names used for smartphone colors over the years have often been more for guidance than an exact palette; the prevalence of rose and rose gold iPhones, which could essentially be called pink, is a classic example. Given Kuo’s information, we likely have a fourth color in addition to those displayed here.

Apple updated the camera lens layout for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, switching the ultrawide and telephoto lenses to allow for stereoscopic video recording when the phone is held in landscape mode. These videos can be watched on the Apple Vision Pro’s spatial video playback system to offer a 3D immersive experience. This layout continues in the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, maintaining the relationship between iOS and visionOS.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus also feature rearranged lenses. The vertical stacking of the two lenses enables the same spatial video recording for the Vision Pro headset.

Additionally, the new capture button on the spine of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro handsets is visible. This complements the programmable action button introduced on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and is expected to function as a two-stage shutter button that allows focus lock before taking a picture. Until we see this in action with final software, the exact functionality will remain unclear.

The iPhone 16 will also incorporate the action button, which was absent in last year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models.

What isn’t shown in these images is the new software bundled with iOS 18. Developer previews are available now, providing a glimpse of Apple’s plans for iOS 18, including the initial steps of generative AI and its implementation on the iPhone.

Apple traditionally launches the new iPhone on the second Tuesday of September, which this year tentatively sets the launch date as Tuesday, September 10.
