A total of 117 Indian athletes, including five reserves, are striving for medals and sporting glory at the Paris 2024 Olympics, held from July 26 to August 11.

India will be competing in 69 medal events across 16 sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics. These sports include archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.

Neeraj Chopra, who made history at Tokyo 2020 by winning gold in men’s javelin throw, is part of the 29-member Indian athletics contingent and aims to add to India’s medal tally at Paris 2024.

Returning Olympic medallists in the Indian contingent include badminton ace PV Sindhu, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, and select members of the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team.

Athletes like Avinash Sable, Antim Panghal, Rohan Bopanna, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Vinesh Phogat, and Aman Sehrawat are also eager to contribute to India’s Olympic medal count at Paris 2024.

Manu Bhaker made history by winning India’s first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She secured a bronze, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. She then made further history by becoming the first Indian to win two medals at a single Olympics, clinching a mixed team 10m air pistol bronze with Sarabjot Singh.

To date, India has won 37 Olympic medals. Norman Pritchard’s dual silver in Paris 1900 marked the beginning of India’s Olympic journey.

KD Jadhav became the first individual athlete from independent India to win an Olympic medal with his wrestling bronze at Helsinki 1952. Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal at Sydney 2000.

Rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra was the first Indian to win an Olympic gold in an individual event at Beijing 2008. He remained the only one to do so for over a decade until Neeraj Chopra’s javelin triumph at Tokyo 2020.

Men’s hockey, with 12 medals including eight golds, has been the largest contributor to India’s Olympic medal tally, followed by wrestling with seven medals.

India achieved its best-ever haul of seven medals, including one gold, at Tokyo 2020 and aims to surpass this record at Paris 2024.

So far, India has won two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
