The 2024 Inter Miami CF Special Olympics Unified Team faced off against the Chicago Fire’s Special Olympics Unified Team, resulting in a thrilling 2-2 draw. This event showcased Inter Miami CF’s motto, “Freedom to Dream,” by promoting inclusivity and diversity through the beautiful game, highlighting its power to unite communities.

Inter Miami CF has been dedicated to providing access and inclusion in sports, partnering with the Special Olympics four years ago. Chris Allan, VP of Fan Strategy & Experience at Inter Miami CF, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “We are committed to providing access and inclusion to people from all walks of life to the beautiful game of fútbol. Today, we celebrate a historic day as our Inter Miami Special Olympics Unified Team plays at home for the first time, and doing so at Chase Stadium is incredible.”

First-Ever Home Match for Inter Miami CF Special Olympics Unified Team

The excitement was palpable as the team prepared for their first-ever home match. Goalkeeper Coach Sebastián Saja led the warm-up session for the Special Olympic Unified Team goalkeepers, sharing his enthusiasm: “For me, it has been a beautiful experience. I was very happy when they called me to assist with the warm-up of our Special Olympics Unified Team goalkeepers. It’s great that Inter Miami CF organizes these types of events.” One of the goalkeepers even recalled Saja’s matches from his playing days, a moment that touched Saja’s heart.

The match kicked off with a bang as Inter Miami’s captain, Daniel Alonso, scored in the second minute, giving the team a 1-0 lead. Having joined the squad in 2021, Alonso played his last game for the team before embarking on his college career. Peter Reece nearly doubled the lead with a powerful shot that hit the crossbar. The first half saw both teams sharing possession, but Chicago managed to take a 2-1 lead by halftime.

The second half was just as exciting, with Reece finally scoring to tie the game 2-2 just minutes before the final whistle. Reece, an original member of the squad and holder of the Deadlift State Record, showcased his strength both on and off the field.
